Over the last three years, Slingerz Football Club and Alpha United developed a rivalry unlike any other in local sports, not just football, and on Sunday at the Leonora Stadium, that enmity between the two biggest clubs in Guyana, will be given a chance to iron out positions on the pitch in the final of the STAG Elite League (League Genesis). The two sides booked their places in the final after coming out in semi-finals which were held at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Ground on Wednesday.
In the opening game, Slingerz FC got the better of Fruta Conquerors 2- 0, while Alpha United ‘hammered’ Pele FC 3 – 1 to set up what many are calling a ‘dream final’.
In the opening game of the night’s double header, fans were kept on their feet throughout the 90-minute contest between Fruta Conquerors and Slingerz FC.
The sides battled to a goalless first half, despite them both creating equal amount of chances. But in the second half, it was all Fruta Conquerors.
Kwamie LaFleur and Eon Alleyne were both guilty of missing wide open goals which could’ve put the game away.
It was a heart breaking moment for Fruta Conquerors when Vurlon Mills netted the game’s first goal in the 82nd minute and then in stoppage time, the veteran Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams put the icing on the cake for Slingerz FC with his brilliant goal (90+3 minutes).
The tears flowed down the cheeks of the Fruta Conquerors players, especially after watching the ‘West Side’ team celebrate reaching the final to play for $4M.
Meanwhile, the second semi-final between Alpha United and Pele FC didn’t live up to the high expectation since the Wayne Dover coached team was too good on the night.
Kithson Bain (17th minute), Dwight Peters (44th minute) and Delon Lanferman (59th minute) netted for Alpha United and despite another good performance from Pele’s talisman Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson who scored in the 65th minute, Alpha United was too strong.
