NARCOTICS possession accused Selwyn Dawson of Lot 170 First Field, Caneville, Grove, EBD was yesterday placed on $75,000 bail after appearing before Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer a charge that he had nine grammes of cannabis in his possession on October 10 at Grove, EBD.The 19-year-old Dawson pleaded not guilty to the charge, but Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones detailed that ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acting on a ‘tip-off’, went to an alleged drug yard in Grove at about 13:30hrs on October 10 last, where Dawson was spotted but started to run. The officers managed to chase him down and apprehend him, and he was observed throwing something over the fence before his apprehension.
The officers retrieved six transparent Ziplock plastic bags from over the fence, and when Dawson was shown the drug, he denied ownership and told the lawmen that he had gone to the fence to urinate. The prosecutor objected to bail, saying that special reasons must be advanced for its grant. Magistrate MacLennan overruled the prosecution’s objections and granted the defendant bail. Dawson will make his next appearance before the Providence Magistrate on October 23.
