GDF dominate opening night, set to reclaim championship title

THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) boxing team dominated the opening night of the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA)/Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate Championship which got under way on Saturday at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre.The soldiers won eight of the 15 fights they contested. Four of their victories were all-GDF affairs.
Defending champions of the Top Gym title, Guyana Prison Service (Republican) won five of the fights they contested.
Winning for the army were: Quincy Boyce who defeated Forgotten Youth Foundation’s (FYF) Orin Bancroft by a unanimous decision in a lightweight contest; Keon Williams beat his gym mate Jonathon Williams on points in a bantamweight contest; Courtney Lynch got a unanimous decision victory over Glenroy Griffith (Republican) in another bantamweight bout; Akeem Henry secured a walkover victory from his gym mate Shaquiel DeYoung; Colin Lewis achieved a second-round technical knock-out win against Kurt Kendall (Republican) in their welterweight clash; Marley Ross overwhelmed Miles Hinds to secure a unanimous decision in another welterweight bout; Dane July bettered his gym mate Julius Hanover in a middleweight bout; Winston Long managed a split decision win against his gym mate Trevaghn Dooker (and Mickle Sancho knocked out Lawrence Lewis at two minutes 18 seconds of the second round in a light heavyweight contest.
Winners for Republican gym: Junior Kelly secured a split decision victory over Triston Brown (GDF) in a junior welterweight bout; Kishon Matthews defeated Michael Worrell (GDF) on points in a junior flyweight affair; Dexter Wray edged Aluko Venture (GDF) on points in a flyweight contest and Junior scored a unanimous points decision over Kevin De Fretias in a lightweight contest.
In other results, Essequibo Boxing Gym’s (Essequibo) Andrew Williams defeated Harpy Eagles’ Leslie Marques in a welterweight bout and Dewani Lampkin (FYF) beat Jamal Brisport (GDF) in a lightweight affair.
Lampkin who had disposed of Brisport came back later in the night and defeated Devon Manroop (Republican) to secure a place in the final which was scheduled for last evening.
Also fighting a second bout on Saturday night’s card was Republican’s Junior Kelly who was victorious against Milton Isaacs (GDF).
Quincy Boyce was down to meet Harpy Eagles’ Travis Hubbard in the lightweight final last evening.
The tournament, which is being sponsored in part by Trophy Stall of Bourda Market, was named the Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate Championship in honour of Blackmoore who was the first Guyanese to win a Commonwealth title. He won the lightweight title in 1977.
