A 19-year-old teenager of Karawab, Upper Pomeroon River died on Wednesday at the Suddie Hospital after he sustained a finger injury from a poisonous wood known as “Washiba”.Reports from the village located some 75 miles from Charity indicate that Ralpthod Joseph was assisting some persons to load a truck with some lumber when one of his fingers got injured by the poisonous wood.
According to reports, the young man did not take the injury serious and treated himself with antibiotics tablets for several days, but the injury got worse.
Reports said he was rushed to the Suddie Hospital where he was admitted but succumbed on Wednesday night.
Several persons with experience in cutting trees in the forest said the wood is poisonous because of the oil it contains. The oil is popularly known as “injector”.
The death of the teenager has caused sadness in the quiet community of Karawab. Joseph is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday.
