THE search team is yet to locate the missing woman, Laleta Sivanand, who disappeared while on a guided tour of the Kaieteur National Park (KNP) on September 1.
She was discovered missing at the airstrip while chits for snacks were being handed out, following a tour of the KNP by a group of tourists.
On Saturday the team from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Special Forces continued the search to locate a female visitor.
A press release said that at 15:00hrs on Saturday, reports indicated that the search of the gorge had ended, and no sighting was reported. The search was slow, due to the dangerous and extremely rugged terrain in the gorge below Kaieteur Falls.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) said in light of the incident, the KNP remains closed until further notice, as the investigation that is being led by the Guyana Police Force, with assistance from other agencies, continues.
A review of the Park’s operation protocols is ongoing to ensure the continued safety of visitors to the magnificent site.
On November 7, 2009, 23-year-old Aliya Bulkan committed suicide by jumping off the Kaieteur Falls and her body was found by GDF Special Forces on November 11, 2009 after days of painstaking search.
She was among a group of tourists when it happened and her body was found among rocks at the bottom of the waterfall.
Eyewitnesses claim that at the end of the tour of the Kaieteur National Park, the falls being the last stop, Bulkan turned back, in the direction of the falls, and made the deadly leap over the 741 ft. high waterfall.
The young woman and a friend, Lisa Ahmad, were among eight others, including the pilot, on the trip to Kaieteur Falls.
