TOWN Clerk Royston King has revealed to this publication that another one of the Mayor and City Council’s (M&CC’s) master plans is the “tearing down” of derelict buildings around Georgetown.

In an exclusive interview with this publication, King disclosed: “We are moving to take down, in another three weeks, a number of derelict buildings in a number of areas, including Regent Street, Water Street, Waterloo Street and a number of other streets.”

This initiative follows launch of the Green City initiative, the M&CC’s move to remove derelict vehicles and equipment from the parapets, and a number of other efforts that are intended to restore Georgetown to its former glory.

“We’re having a holistic approach to cleaning up Georgetown and to pushing this whole concept of a clean and green city. It is an inter-departmental approach wherein all the departments will be involved, including the constabulary, engineers and public health departments, along with the volunteer corps as part of the Green City initiative,” the Town Clerk said.

This volunteer corps will complement what the M&CC will be doing in those areas. For instance the food and hygiene officers, along with the members of other departments, will be taking a holistic approach to community restoration and development.
The body which will be conducting the initiative is registered under the M&CC, which will give the body oversight as an extension of the civic responsibility of the M&CC. King noted: “Persons who are not working for City Hall are advised to be a part of it.”

King announced that the M&CC will, on Saturday (today), be moving into areas to undertake massive drainage works, particularly in the city wards of Bourda and Lacytown.

“The M&CC will be providing everything, as in tools, etc… persons are being called upon to come out and support us as we move towards transforming our City,” he said. (Navendra Seoraj)
