THE 10th National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF), organised by Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) saw St Rose’s, Mackenzie High School, JC Chandisingh, and Kwakwani Secondary pick up wins on the opening day, when the tournament bounced off at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. In the day’s first game, an Under-14 Mackenzie High School defeated St Rose’s High 30-16. Yonnick Tappin led all scorers with a game-high 14 points and eight rebounds while Kwesi Roberts had five points and nine rebounds for St Rose’s.
St Rose’s, however, bounced back in the Under-19 category when they dismantled Wismar Christianburg Secondary School (CWSS) 35-22.
Anfernee Jervis had 10 points, eight rebounds and Nathan Saul’s 12 points and five rebounds were the prime scorers for St Rose’s. Daniel Lee and Akinni Wilson both shot six points for the Lindeners.
Another school from the mining town fell on opening day – Mackenzie High lost 37-41 to JC Chandisingh.
Osafo Profitt with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Joshua Hicks seven points, top-scored for JC Chandisingh. Daniel Anthony scored a game-high 13 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for Mackenzie High School.
New Amsterdam Multilateral won via ‘walkover’ after Plaisance Secondary were a no-show for their Under-16 clash.
Meanwhile, in the lone female contest, defending champions Kwakwani Secondary made a successful start to their title defence, defeating Marian Academy 28-8.
Kenesha Leacock had an all-round performance with 13 points, three rebounds and four steals for the eventual winners.
The tournament continued last evening at the same venue.
