AT this month’s annual general meeting, outgoing UWSC President Jennifer Prashad announced increases to UWSC’s annual funding to Special Needs Schools in Guyana. With annual donations to three special needs schools, individuals and groups reaching just over $5 million, the non-profit organisation marks its biggest annual investment yet, toward the organisation’s mission to help children with special needs meet their highest potential. This work includes investment in refurbishment to the New Amsterdam Special Needs School, to increase safety and accessibility for students and stipends to support volunteers. There is also financial assistance for children at The David Rose School for the Handicapped, to enable them to attend Aqua therapy sessions; and there is also a feeding programme.
Moreover, plans are in place to construct a building at the East Bank Special Needs School, which will include a craft/play room. This work will commence during the upcoming school holiday period.
Incoming President of the organisation, Mrs. Angela Rahaman, said: “In the coming year, UWSC plans to continue support for these schools, and to continue our partnerships with the Linden Care Foundation, Guyana Public Hospital Foundation’s Language and Speech Therapy Unit, and Deaf-In-Guyana. We are proud to support each of these foundations as our donations permit.”
Outgoing President Prashad congratulated members on their ongoing fundraising successes. “In our successes of the last several years, I am motivated by the words of educator Robert John Meehan, who writes: “Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning, but also capable of succeeding.”
UWSC is pleased to introduce its new Executive:
President, Angela Rahaman; Vice President, Anya Persaud; Treasurer, Renita Persaud ; Secretary, Cindy Rahaman; Asst. Sec./Treas., Quenita Waldron;
Committee Members: Ann Geer, Shellyann Bhagwandin, Tanya Persaud
