Plucked chicken thief to serve one-year jail sentence

SATESH Persaud, called ‘Ghandi’, of Belvedere Village, Corentyne, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment after being found guilty of stealing twenty-five pounds of chicken from Arjune’s Chicken Outlet in his home village. When he made his first court appearance, the seventeen-year-old told Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus that he had found the chicken in a bucket along the roadway.

“I did not trouble his chicken. I saw the chicken on the road (and) I picked it up. I told persons around that if anyone enquired about the plucked birds, tell them I get it,” Satesh Persaud had said.
The charges he faces detail that between March 10/11, at Belvedere, he broke and entered the chicken outlet of Deonarine Arjune and stole four trays of eggs and the chicken, totalling $14,000.

Police Sergeant Phillip Sherriff said the defendant cut the chain that secured the back door of the outlet, before entering the premises and removing the articles.

Following information received, Arjune went to the house where Persaud stayed and recovered a bucket in which the poultry meat was discovered. Persaud reportedly told the complainant that he had committed the act because he was hungry.

The matter was subsequently transferred before Albion Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh, who imposed the sentence on Persaud.
