IN HIS last nine fights famed Guyanese featherweight Clifford Matthew Anderson (Cliff) lost six times. The master of the ring could only muster two victories from April 1952 to May of the following year when he had his last contest.
One of the victories occurred at the National Sporting Club in Piccadilly, London on April 30 1952 when Anderson TKOed Englishman Emmett Kenny in the sixth round.
It was the penultimate victory of a stellar career that included two attempts at the Commonwealth featherweight title.
His other victory came against Selwyn Evans in October 1952. Obviously in the twilight of his career, Anderson then lost four consecutive bouts and punctuated that with a draw, before losing his last fight on May 18, 1953.
Anderson was born in New Amsterdam, Berbice and started fighting professionally in 1940. He had his first seven bouts in Guyana before moving to England.
