Pierre, Eastman, Griffith for Barbados

LIGHT heavyweight boxer Markember `Violence’ Pierre is scheduled to lead a team of Guyanese boxers to the Horace Phillips Memorial competition to be staged in Barbados tomorrow.Pierre and flyweights Jamaal Eastman and Ceon Griffith will depart tomorrow afternoon accompanied by manager/coach Wincell Thomas and referee/ judge Keith Norville.

Eastman will compete in the elite flyweight while Griffith is down to do battle in the youth flyweight. President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, disclosed that Barbados had originally asked for five boxers but recently had reduced the number to three.
He noted that all three boxers have a wealth of talent and singled out Eastman as a ‘diamond in the rough’. The boxers have been encamped for two weeks at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis gym and is scheduled to return home on Sunday.
The Barbados competition comes one week after a team of 14 boxers and officials returned from a tournament held in French Guiana, and represents a hike in international competition for local fighters, compared to the same time last year.
The Horace Phillips Memorial is an annual competition held in Barbados and Guyana have dominated in recent time. Last year a team of five boxers returned with three gold and two silver medals.
Ninvalle thanked COURTS, Monty Profitt of Trustee’s Pawn Shop in Robb Street, National Sports Commission, Dave’s Pharmacy, LIAT and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport for making participation possible.
