THE Bermuda and Guyana National basketball teams are promising an exciting three-game goodwill series which bounces off tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Matches continue on March 12 and 14 and will mark the first time the British territory will be visiting Guyana and their second time facing off, following their clash at the 2011 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Tournament in Bahamas.
At a press conference yesterday, the two sides spoke of their quest of finding the right combination ahead of the 2015 CBC tournament in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) from June 16 to 20.
Head coach of the Guyana team Darcel Harris named a 16-man squad which will be captained by Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai. He said the squad is hungry and fans can expect a 200% effort.
The entire Bermuda contingent arrived in Guyana last evening but at the time of the Press Conference only four were present, one of whom was the team’s vice-captain Chris Crumpler, who thanked the GABF on behalf of the rest of the team and head coach Roderick Spencer. “We take this as an honour and a privilege and we look forward to the matches. It’s a treat for us to be here for the first time and we’re looking forward to a great series.”
Questioned on the composition of Guyana team since the list boasts mostly guards, Darcel told the gathering of reporters at the WindJammer Hotel that currently, in the local game “there’s a shortage of quality big men and it would have been too difficult working with the others based on the time we had.
“Shane Webster is out so we went with the other four dominant big men that we’ve seen in Guyana for the longest while. We’re looking to play up tempo, that’s the reason for the young guards as well as some experienced guards.”
Apart from Sullivan Phillips, the Island’s most successful and popular basketball player, the core of the team resides and plays basketball in Bermuda. Crumpler said that his side’s composition is one which leaves little room for debate since it’s the best they have to offer.
President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Nigel Hinds feels that a win for Guyana against Bermuda will be a big boost for the country’s basketball having placed the visitors as one of the CBC’s best team.
Jump-ball time is 19:00hrs tonight and tomorrow but on Saturday the game starts at 20.00hrs with two supporting games before the two-country showdown.
The Guyana team: Akeem Kanhai (captain), Jermaine Slater, Terron Welch, Travis Burnett, Dave Causeway, Jason Squires, Ryan Stephany, Ryan Gullen, Shelroy Thomas, Randy Richardson, Royston Siland, Dominic Vincente, Rodwell Fortune, Neil Marks and Nikkoloi Smith.
