THE long-serving Palms Geriatric Institution last Thursday, with the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, concluded its Month of the Elderly activities at the home with a brunch for residents and non-residents.
On the lawns of the home, the elderly were served a delicious meal under decorated tents. Residents from other homes across Georgetown such as Byer’s Senior Citizens’ Home, Archer’s Home, the Salvation Army Women’s Hostel, Uncle Eddie’s Home, the National Veterans Home and Ivy Hall Memorial Home were also invited.
RANGE OF ACTIVITIES
During October, the residents of the Palms and other elderly persons indulged in activities such as the Spa Day, Games Day, Church Service, Health Fairs, Tea Parties, Lunches and Concerts and a trip to Splashmins Resort.
Disabled resident of the Palms for three years, Herawan Singh expressed his satisfaction with the activities, noting that he looks forward to the events every year and tries to take part as much as he can.
Administrator of the Geriatric Institution, Samantha Douglas said the Administration seeks to modify the activities every year for the Month of the Elderly celebrations so as to keep the residents interested and to provide them with new experiences.
Month of the Elderly was launched in October 2010 by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security. This year it was held under the theme “Working for the Elderly, Celebrating their contributions to Guyana.”
