PS Croal informs… : $37M collaborative Mabaruma market tarmac 80 percent complete

THE Mabaruma Market Tarmac now under construction in the North West District is expected to significantly halt land erosion occurring at the Kumaka Waterfront in Region One (Barima/Waini). It is now 80 percent completed and will soon be ready for use.

Colin-CroalPermanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Collin Croal, made this statement last week when he provided an update on the work at a press conference he co-hosted along with Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Norman Whittaker.
Croal said the project for the Mabaruma Market extension is also to come on stream this year.
The contract for building a market tarmac for Kumaka, also in the North West District, was signed and awarded to Joshi Construction and Transportation Establishment.
That tarmac, which costs $37M, is a collaborative venture among the Local Government, Public Works, and Finance Ministries.
In addition to resolving the land erosion issues, the tarmac will allow for vending in a more conducive environment. The new facility could be used as well for social engagements and physical interactions at the level of games and sports.
Former Local Government Minister, Ganga Persaud, had said that while the Ministry responded positively to vendors’ request to be allowed to sell on the pavements for a period, the Ministry is committed to making optimum use of the tarmac. (Vanessa Narine)
