East Ruimveldt man and female neighbour face charges after fracas

AN East Ruimveldt man who was charged with assault and inflicting grievous bodily harm, following a fracas with his female neighbour, was placed on a total of $125,000 bail Tuesday by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Edmond Allen, 51, of Lot 708 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Particulars in one charge stated that on April 1 at East Ruimveldt he inflicted grievous bodily harm to a minor.
The other charge said that on the same day he unlawfully assaulted Jenny Meyers, causing her actual bodily harm.
Police prosecutor Michael Grant said the both parties are neighbours and on that day the Meyers’ daughter saw Allen throwing garbage into their yard. Subsequently, an argument developed and the defendant hit Meyers with a spade and also hit her minor daughter with a wood to her hand.
He said Meyers then pelted a bottle towards Allen which broke his window.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat representing Allen told the court that his client was digging his drain and threw the mud close to the Meyers’ plants, when her daughter ran out from their yard and attacked him. Defence counsel claimed that all Allen did was to defend himself during the attack. He requested bail in a reasonable sum, stating that the child earlier had been playing freely with her hand but in court her hand was wrapped up.
Meyers was also accused of damage to property and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her. The allegation said that on April 1 at East Ruimveldt, she damaged a window valued $1,000, property of Allen.
Her attorney-at-law Mr. George Thomas in a bail application said that his client has no reason to absent herself from court and has no prior conviction. In those circumstances he requested that his client be placed on her own recognizance.
The prosecutor did not object to bail for either of the two defendants and the case was transferred before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond for trial on April 23.
