JAMAL Younge (no address given) was on Tuesday last refused bail on a larceny from the person charge, by Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty. The 23-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said that on Friday, December 27, in Albouystown, Georgetown, he stole one “Touch Smart” phone, valued $70,000, from Nikesha Chew.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, representing the defendant pro bono, requested that he be placed on a special programme after the defendant offered an explanation that did not correspond with his plea.
Younge stated that his son suffers from a “head cold” and does not have anyone to assist him financially.
The case was put off to January 21, 2014.
Younge was one of two 23-year-olds who suffered the same fate in that court.
The other, Chavez Alves, of Lot 624 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, is charged with robbery with aggravation but was not required to plead to the charge, particulars of which said on Friday, December 27, at Kingston, in Georgetown, being in the company of others, he robbed Hoosay Mackenzie of two cellular phones and $6,000 cash making a total loss of $26,000 to the victim and, at the time, during or after, made use of personal violence against him.
Police Corporal Seon Blackman, prosecuting, told the court that the crime was committed at the Kingston seawall by the accused and two others who were previously remanded.
The prosecutor successfully objected to pre-trial liberty for the accused as well, pointing out that the cash was found on Alves and he was positively identified by the virtual complainant.
The case will be called, again, on January 7, 2014.
