NDIA collaborating efforts following another breach of drainage canal in Region Two

FOUR mini excavators and a pump were delivered to the Essequibo Coast yesterday morning following another dam breach of the main drainage canal in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam).The situation was remedied a few days ago, but Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Ganga Persaud told reporters that one more breakage occurred about 03:00 hrs yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference in his Fort Street, Kingston, Georgetown Ministry, he said, as a result, the surrounding communities are under serious threat.
So far, a team from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is at the location to provide expertise on how to seal the dam and the Ministries of Agriculture, Public Works and Local Government are also, consistently, working along with the relevant Neighbourhood Democratic Councils to render relief.
Persaud said he is hoping and praying that those efforts will minimise the difficulties that are being experienced by residents.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture has advised of frequent showers that are expected along the coastal regions, with heaviest rainfall anticipated over Regions Five (Mahaica/Berbice) and Six (East Berbice/Corentyne).
A Ministry statement said areas for attention, include Black Bush Polder and villages of Lower and Central Corentyne and Canal Polder, Pomeroon and a number of villages along the Essequibo.
The NDIA, Regional Officials and NDCs are closely monitoring the situation, the release said.
It added: “We are cautioning residents, especially in low-lying regions to take precautionary measures against flooding. The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to monitor and bring you updates as the situation unfolds.”
Contact can be made on hotline telephone numbers 227-5049, 223-7291, 643 4369 (SMS ONLY) to report any flooding or breach, the Ministry advisory said.
