Magistrate criticises Police investigation but jails dangerous driver

A FORTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD hire car driver, Richie Bishop, of Devonshire Castle, was imprisoned for six months after he was found guilty of dangerous driving.Magistrate Sunil Scarce pronounced the sentence on Thursday, December 5, at Suddie Court, for the offence committed on November 8, 2012, at Hoff Van Aurich, also on the Essequibo Coast.
The charge said Bishop drove motor car HC 1122 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the demise of Muszid Sabar but on December 5, 2013, Magistrate Scarce dismissed that charge and found Bishop guilty, beyond reasonable doubt, of dangerous driving and inflicted the custodial penalty.
Bishop had made his first appearance on November 14, 2012, in Anna Regina Court where he was granted bail prior to his trial, at which six witnesses were called by the prosecution.
When asked for his defence, the defendant made an unsworn statement and presented one witness.
Attorney-at-law Ms. Beverly Bishop, who represented the defendant, gave oral notice of appeal and requested bail but police prosecutor Krishna Datt Ramana successfully objected to the grant.
The magistrate remarked that the police photography in the case left much to be desired and the traffic officers did poor investigation into the accident.
