6TH GEORGETOWN GUINNESS ‘GREATEST OF DE STREETS’

New champions to be crowned this year

WITH defending champions Leopold Street and former champions and pre-tournament favourites Back Circle failing to make the knockout stage of this year’s sixth annual Georgetown Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Futsal football competition, a new champion will be crowned when the tournament culminates next Saturday at the National Park.West front Road, Sophia North, California Square, Broad Street B, Island All Star, North East La Penitence, Albouystown ‘A’ and ‘B’, East La Penitence, Queen Street, Costello Housing Scheme, Berlin Massive, Globe Yard, Alexander Village, Hope Street and Stevedore Housing Scheme have all made it to the round of 16.
This stage of the tournament, where teams will be forced to win their respective matches or go home, commences tomorrow at the Banks DIH Demerara Park where action took place last Monday night and the fixtures are as follows:
Berlin Massive will take on Globe Yard, Alexander Village battle Hope Street-Tiger Bay, Queen Street-Tiger Bay meet Costello Housing Scheme and Stevedore Housing Scheme go up against Albouystown ‘A’, followed by the Guinness half-hour break.
On the resumption of play, California Square go head-to-head with Broad Street ‘B’, West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ face Sophia North, Island All Star will look to upset North East La Penitence before Albouystown ‘B’ and East La Penitence pull the curtain on the night’s proceedings.
Meanwhile, results from last Monday night show Leopold Street winning their final preliminary round game, after losing the first two, when they defeated Broad Street ‘B’ 6-5 in sudden death penalty kicks taken from the halfway mark, after regulation time ended with the scores reading 1-1.
Mark Hart scored first for the defending champions in the 22nd minute, only to see Jamal Cozier negating that lead two minutes later with his strike for Broad Street ‘B’, who, despite the loss, made it to the next round.
Berlin Massive opened the night’s proceedings with their 3-1 win over Norton Street-West, with Michael Payne (7th), Devon Charles (10th) and Akine Collins (13th) finding the back of the net for Berlin Massive, after Nigel DeCamp had sent Norton Street-West into the lead with his 6th minute goal.
Thanks to a brace from Steven Dolphin in the 3rd and 4th minutes of play, Stevedore Housing Scheme defeated North-Last Entrance 2-0, following which Albouystown ‘A’ gained a walkover victory from Norton Street-East.
Game Four saw Globe Yard and Tucville play to a 3-3 stalemate, with Lionel Lali hitting a double for Globe Yard in the 4th and 14th minutes which complemented Kevin Lewis’ 2nd minute goal.
Jahaal Greaves also got a double for Tucville in the 5th and 24th minutes, and Gordon Henry struck in the 23rd minute before Stevedore took the contest from the penalty spot with a 3-2 margin.
Hope Street-Tiger Bay blanked Kingston 3-0, through goals from Rensford Coleridge (8th), Dwayne Dickson (13th) and Dennis Caledenia (17th), Bent Street edged Alexander Village 2-1 through a Sheldon Profitt double (2nd and 18th) with Shem Porter scoring the losers’ lone goal in the 16th minute.
And in the penultimate game of the night before Leopold Street chalked up their lone win of this year’s tournament, Albouystown ‘B’ walked away with a 2-1 win over River View, with Marlon Nedd (5th) and Roy Cassou (16th) scoring for the victors, while Travis Martin pulled one back for the losers in the 9th minute.
