THE coastal drainage initiative by Government appears to be paying off as minor high rising water levels created during the recent torrential downpour quickly disappeared.
While the same cannot be said for the city of Georgetown, the East Coast and West Coast Demerara were saved from the usual occurrence of major flooding that had inundated the coastal belt in previous years.
Residents of Bare Root, Enterprise and other villages, who were affected by the slightest heavy rainfall in the past reported that their communities have not been heavily impacted by flooding this time around, neither did the water level remain as it used to previously.
They posited that works undertaken recently by the Ministry of Agriculture must have contributed to the better conditions.
However, most have not expressed total optimism, especially in communities where similar undertakings are being awaited. Others feel that more has to be done to further improve the drainage system since a prolonged rain may, more than likely, render unfavourable results.
