Agriculture Ministry clears air on MOU signed with T&T government

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Government of Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) in September to grant the Twin-Island access to lands in Guyana for the purpose of sustainable food production.

The Agriculture Ministry in a release said since its announcement, several questions were raised by the media, private sector and Opposition spokespersons with respect to its legality, benefits to be derived, and authenticity.
It added that despite making efforts to clarify some of the misconceptions, it was brought to the attention of the Ministry of Agriculture that certain sections of media have been quoting a specific figure (10,000 acres), and has been misleading the public into thinking that an agreement was inked for that amount.
Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and Trinidad’s Agriculture Minister Devant Maharaj held a press briefing on November 21 when they apprised the media of their discussions. However, no commitment was made on the amount of land to be used in this venture, since additional discussions are currently ongoing.
The MOU between the two Governments addresses several areas including;-

  • Programmes and activities
  • Core areas of cooperation
  • Monitoring and Coordinating Mechanism
  • Mutual responsibility
  • Commitments/ settlements
  • Rights and Obligations and
  • Scope for termination

The Ministry of Agriculture said it therefore wishes to plead with the Editors-in-Chief to be responsible when reporting on the Guyana/Trinidad MOU.
