DISTRICTS 10 (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani) and 11 (North Georgetown) are in a keen battle for top honours in the Track and Field aspect of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU)/Ministry of Education (MoE)/Digicel 53rd Annual Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships which continued yesterday at the Providence National Stadium.
District 10 athlete, Shannon Griffith, registered 12.4 seconds in winning the Under-20 girls 100-metre final, while her team mates, Chelsea Calixte and Compton Caesar, won the under-16 girls 800-metre and under-16 boys 800-metre respectively.
Calixte returned two minutes 23.6 seconds, while Caesar clocked two minutes 04.1 seconds.
District 11’s Floyd Phillips won the male teachers under-21 100-metre event in 11.6 seconds, while team mate Kevin Abbensetts won the under-20 boys 100-metre in 10.6 seconds.
Shaqunne Daniels (District 11, North Georgetown) and Tiffany Carto of District 13 (South Georgetown) placed second and third respectively to Griffith in the girls under-20 100-metre, while Delica Harper and Kezra Murray were second and third respectively to Calixte in the under-16 girls 800-metre.
Anfernee Headecker (District 11) and Ruel Chester of District 5 (West Berbice) were second and third respectively in the under-16 boys 800-metre.
In the female teachers under-21 100-metre final, (District 13) South Georgetown’s athlete, Euodia Forte, won in a time of 13.5 seconds, second was District 12 (East Georgetown) Abigail Robertson and third District 10’s Melissa McBean.
The 100-metre for male teachers under-21 was won by District 11’s Floyd Phillips in 11.6 seconds. Second was District 3, Kevin Paul, while District 5’s Akim Buston placed third.
The boys under-18 100-metre event was won by District Four Jason Yaw in a time of 10.8 seconds. Second was District 11’s Arinze Chance and third District Six’ Mark Wronge.
On the distaff side, District 11’s Deja Smartt won in 13.0 seconds, second was District 12’s Mearisha Carter.
In the 800-metre girls under-18 final, District Four (East Coast Demerara) athlete Andrea Foster won in two minutes 20.4 seconds. Second was District 15 (New Amsterdam) Melissa Byass and third District 10’s Cassie Kirton.
The boys under-18 800-metre final was won by District Four’s Ornesto Thomas, second was District 11 Orin Prince and third District 10’s Shaquille Smartt.
