Two years imprisonment for theft from cousin

EON Fraser, of Number 41 Village, West Coast Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday, facing three charges of simple larceny.

The 26-year-old was sentenced to two years imprisonment on one charge and remanded to prison on the other two, until December 5.
He had admitted that, on November 4 in Regent Street, Georgetown, he stole one gold chain, one cellular phone and $50,000 cash, all to the total value of $175,000, from Brian Callendar.
But he pleaded not guilty to two other offences, one of which said, on the same day, in Regent Street, too, he stole $300,000 from Nickel Rodriguez.
The defendant also denied the third allegation that, between November 1 and 4, in New Market Street, he stole one baby gold ring and two cellular phones to the value of $99,000, from Callendar, as well.
Police Corporal Dinero Jones, prosecuting, told the Court that Callendar and the defendant are cousins and Rodriguez is the owner of a store, part of which is rented to Callendar.
Callendar sells merchandise and employed Fraser to work with him as a porter but he took the latter to the business place to do some carpentry and other maintenance.
Purchase rum
However, when he sent Fraser to purchase rum, the man did not return and, on the security camera, Rodriguez saw the defendant removing a chain from his bag, the prosecutor related.
He said a further check on the premises revealed that money and cellular phones were missing and a subsequent search on the person of the defendant yielded the chain in his pants pocket.
Fraser claimed, though, that he did not steal the jewel but borrowed it and agreed he did not return the night they claimed he committed the larceny.
He said, the next day, his aunt informed him of the allegations and he called his cousin, informing that he had misplaced the cellular phone and will have it replaced.
