$50,000 bail in receiving stolen property case

ROY SINGH, of Lot 66 Hadfield Street, Lodge, was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail when he was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for receiving stolen property on Diwali Day. The 42-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence that said on Sunday, November 3, at Georgetown, he received from Orlando Wilson one sheep valued $80,000, belonging to Sahadeo Mohabir, knowing same to be stolen.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat represented the defendant and claimed that his client bought the stolen item, but was not aware that it was stolen property.
Police prosecutor Corporal Bharat Mangru informed the court that on the day in question, Wilson stole the sheep from Mohabir. After the matter was reported to the police, he admitted selling it to Singh for $10,000.
Mangru did not object to bail and the matter was put off for Januray17, 2014.
