AN energetic team of members from the Demerara Lions Club of Zone 2A, headed by the president, Lion Blossom Manbodh, yesterday, conducted a successful medical outreach for residents of St. Thomas Moore Homestead, Lamaha Street, Kitty.

The delighted group applauded the initiative and asked the Lions team to “feel free to call again.”
According to Lion Manbodh, the project was in keeping with International Lions World Service Day. Considering that health-related services are second to none, the club decided on taking this essential health care service to the residents of the Homestead to spare them the stress of accessing such services, particularly since they cannot all be accessed in one place.
And so for the clients yesterday, it was virtually a ‘one stop shop’ – the cost of which they did not have to bear.
Following the outreach, the residents were provided with lunch, compliments of the visiting Lions Club members who also made a presentation of gift hampers to the residents.
The services provided to the 17 all-male residents, and three staff members included: Hypertension checks; blood-glucose (diabetes) checks and prophylactic treatment to safeguard them against exposure to possible primary health problems. Additionally, all residents benefited from dental health care, including free cleaning of the teeth, which would attract a minimal cost of $10,000 in the event they had to go to a private facility.
The initiative was organised and executed jointly by the group of Lions and the Ministry of Health and the services were provided, compliments of the Ministry of Health and the Cheddi Jagan Dental Centre. The four-member medical team comprised Dr. Hans Madeleke, General Practitioner and Nursing Assistant, Ms. Adel Mc Kenzie from the Georgetown Public Hospital and from the Cheddi Jagan Dental Centre Dr. Karen Tai-Yo-Young and Dental Therapist Shondel Nurse.
St. Thomas Moore is a home for the elderly male, owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese in Guyana. There are at present 17 persons being accommodated at the facility. The administrator is Mr. Winston Plater and he is assisted by a House Mother and two Care Providers and ancillary staff.
