YESTERDAY, Digicel Guyana presented a cheque for an undisclosed amount to the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Committee Fund, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in which free mammograms will be offered to women for October.Speaking at a press briefing at Digicel Guyana headquarters at Fort and Barrack Streets, Kingston, General Manager of the Guyana Cancer Institute, Fiona Legall, said the institution would continue its fight against the dreaded disease in Breast Cancer Awareness Month under the theme “Together we fight”.
She added that the institution was pleased to partner with Digicel, since breast cancer remains the third leading cause of death in Guyana.
Legall said the Guyana Cancer Institute is relentless in its effort to combat the disease through awareness, with particular emphasis on early detection and treatment.
Chairman of the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Committee Fund, Mignon Bowen, recognised Digicel for its valued partnership.
She said this is the eighth year since the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Walk started as a project, and it has since evolved and grown into an annual programme.
She said the institute’s October activities highlight awareness as the key word in disseminating information to women across Guyana.
Bowen explained that from inception of the project, response has been overwhelming; as such, the body is now offering free mammograms to women for breast cancer screening, to aid in the early detection of the disease.
She also lauded Digicel for the assistance offered to the institute and to the Guyana Cancer Society. Digicel Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope and Sales and Distribution Manager Nalini Vieira spoke of the Guyana Cycle Federation’s launch of the Digicel Annual Cancer Awareness Cycle Road Race.
