GBA/Mackeson ‘Fight Night’ – Gibson too good for Ting-A-Kee

BOXING fans in the mining town of Linden turned out in their hundreds to witness the action in the first ever Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) organised Ansa McAl’s Mackeson Stoute sponsored Fight Night at the Amelia’s Ward Bus Park last Saturday night.
And certainly, the country’s Simon Purees who were on show, did not hesitate to whet the appetite of the fans on hand, as the night’s action certainly delivered a knockout punch to the

spectators, who left with nothing but praises in their mouths for the GBA.
In one of the featured bouts of the night, Clairmont Gibson and Kevin Ting-A-Kee set tongues wagging in a quality display of amateur boxing, when the two met in a closely fought lightweight contest, which Gibson won via a lopsided decision.
Ting-A-Kee became the clear crowd favourite after he floored Gibson in the first round, courtesy of a left jab to his opponent’s head, who after receiving the mandatory eight count, proceeded to unleash his punches on Ting-A-Kee, with the aim of regaining lost points.
Gibson landed some lusty blows, including several combinations over Ting-A-Kee’s jab, which for him was his most effective punch, but it failed to have any impact even as Gibson’s punches were having an effect on the judge’s scorecards.
Of the three rounds, the third round looked more convincing for Gibson, who continually backed up Ting-A-Kee into a corner and literally made him a punching bag, forcing the referee to administer an eight count and even though Ting-A-Kee was allowed to continue, it was just to make him Gibson’s punching bag, as the eventual victor punched his way to a commanding victory.
Stephan Gouveia won the other Lightweight bout with a unanimous decision against Anandram Dharamraj, while in another action-packed fight Bert Braithwaite used his superior power and skill to dismantle a taller Kelon King in a Junior Welterweight fight.
Aquincy Ageday won the other Junior Welterweight bout after he forced Kurt Kendall to retire, following a first round brawl that put both boxers on the canvas once, before a relentless looking Ageday forced Kendall to call it quits for the night.
Trevon King won unanimously against William Hendricks, who had points taken away for bull-rushing King in a Middleweight dual and Marvin Ageday took the other fight in this category against Kevin Rodney also with a unanimous decision.
In the Welterweight Division, Eon Bancroft secured a lopsided decision against Clifton Grahame after Bancroft had also beaten Ron Smith in the first fight of the night and in the two Junior fights of the night, Teo Bumbury secured a split decision against Muntehel Johnson while Joshua Corbin won unanimously against Kevon Mulling.
