LABOURER Mohamed Ghanie, 39, of Kabakaburi Village, Upper Pomeroon River, was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $30,000, last Monday, for possession of a narcotic.
Magistrate Sunil Scarce inflicted the penalties on him at the Charity Court, Essequibo Coast, where the prisoner pleaded guilty to having five grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) on September 15.
He was found with the prohibited substance by a police patrol at Siriki, Upper Pomeroon River.
Police Prosecutor Krishnadatt Ramana said Ghanie was seen acting in a suspicious manner on the Siriki Cricket Ground.
At the time, he had a brown knapsack and, when searched, it was found to contain a plastic bag with a quantity of seeds, leaves and stems of the prohibited plant.
