Berbice squad to be involved in practice game today … Players undergo rigorous fitness session

THE MANAGING Director of the New Amsterdam-based Universal DVD Store, Vicram Seubarran, saw the need to sponsor a practice game involving the members of the Berbice squad, who are currently preparing to compete in this year’s Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)-organised, Pepsi-sponsored Senior Inter-county 50 overs tournament which bowls off today.

Seubarran, who is an ardent cricket fan and enthusiast, said today’s practice game which bowls off at 09:30hrs, can be used to test and assess the level of the players who were in the training sessions at Albion, with the hope that they excel at the Inter-county level.
It is also being organised in the interest of developing cricket and cricketers in the county, since it was noted that the players were training at the Albion Sports Complex since September 10 and have been exposed to lots of physical exercises on a daily basis.
Former Guyana and West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon and hard-hitting middle-order batsman Jonathan Foo, were named as the captains of the two teams, with Chattergoon’s team reading: Sewnarine Chattergoon, Anthony D’Andrade, Seon Hetmyer, Rajiv Ivan, Anthony Bramble, Eon Hooper, K Hassan, Clinton Pestano, Keon Fraser and Kevin Ramdeen.
Foo’s XI will come from: Jonathan Foo, Shimron Hetmyer, Surujnarine Kandasammy, Devon Clements, Krisendat Ramoo, Shawn Pereira, Keon Joseph, Romario Shepherd DeJonge, Joemal LaFleur, Yogindra Harrinarine and Jason Sinclair.
Meanwhile, Guyana Cricket Board Senior Chairman of Selectors, Rayon Griffith, journeyed to the Ancient County yesterday morning, to supervise and at the same time, assist with the fitness test for the players named in the Berbice squad.
In an invited comment after the two-and-half-hour session, Griffith said he was pleased with the level of fitness displayed by the Berbicians, even though some of them are weak in certain areas and challenged them to play as a team and give of their best in the upcoming tournament.
“Some of you are strong in the agility area, speed and fitness while some of you are lacking. It is advisable that the weak work with the strong, to not only develop that person in that specific area, but also help develop cricket from the club level, to the Inter-Association, County and later at the National level.
“Having said that, we will continue to look at you guys closely, since the results from these tests tell us as selectors, who have been doing work in the off-season and who were not and once things go according to plan, we may have two more of these sessions, before the Super50 is played next year,” said Griffith.
He called on the Berbicians to play as a team, be their brother’s keeper, put aside hatred and backbiting and work towards one common goal, which is to further develop cricket in Berbice and to an extent, Guyana at large.
Apart from Griffith, Hubern Evans, who is being dubbed as the man to handle the coaching reins for the Ancient County team, and Julian Moore assisted with the fitness test of the players, for which all three coaches expressed their pleasure in the rnd.
