Former national hockey player Stephen Fernandes ruled the roost, when national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed staged the 13th Annual DeSinco Trading sponsored 11-race cycle programme under the Degree brand name in the National Park.
The former midfield hockey player who choose to use cycling as a means of weight reduction over the past five years, returned a time of one hour, 24 minutes 17.31 seconds to win the feature School Boys and Novices 35-lap race ahead of last year’s winner Marlon `Fishy’ Williams, veteran Raymond Newton, Chris Persaud, Neil Reece and Alonzo Ambrose respectively.
Fernandes also captured two of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs.
The other prime prizes were won by Williams who captured three, Newton, McKay, and Ambrose who won one each.
Fernandes who started competitive cycling two years ago was with a chasing of the pack of eight cyclists going in to the 23rd lap and once connected, the bunch stayed together for another lap when Fernandes stole the march on the bunch and kept extending his lead during the remaining laps, extending his lead from approximately 150 metres during the 25th lap to approximately 400 metres after 28 laps.
With seven laps remaining, the well trimmed Fernandes who threw off more than 75 pounds in about 18 months (from 250 pounds) continued to fast pace on a light gear and extended his lead tremendously, closing in on the main chasing pack which he had in sight with two laps remaining.
After receiving the bell for the final lap, he eased his pace and rode across the finish line way ahead of the main chasing pack which included Williams, Newton, Chris Persaud, Reece and Ambrose
Earlier in the race, Ambrose and Reece surged ahead of the 23-man field and held on to the lead for two laps before Newton surged ahead.
Warren McKay then took control of things from the fifth lap but Williams took over during the next lap and held on to the lead until the ninth lap when. Robin Persaud then took over the lead and together with Chris Persaud, led for another two laps.
During the 15th lap, Williams and Chris Persaud stole the march and opened an approximately 100 metres lead on the main chasing bunch.
The duo maintained the lead until the 19th lap when Ambrose connected to them.
The trio led for another three laps before being pulled in by the main chasing bunch which included Fernandes who jumped the pack and was never pursued.
In other results from the day’s programme, Alfie Soonaram won the BMX boys and girls 12-14 three-lap race ahead of Jamal John and Andrew Hicks respectively, while Newton was the winner of the veterans under 50 years five-lap race. Second was talim Shaw and third Sybourn Fernandes.
Linden Blackman won the veterans over 50 years five-lap event ahead of Virgil Jones and Wilfred Thom respectively, while Monty Parris finished ahead of Maurice Fagundes in the five-lap race for veterans over 60 years.
The 10-lap juvenile event was won by Ray Rawle who finished ahead of Hicks and Cleveland King respectively.
The five-lap race for mountain bikers was won by Richard Charles, second was Kein Thomas and third Clyde Jacobs.
Sherwin Sampson won the two-lap race for BMX boys 9-12 years old, second was Jeremiah Harrison and third was five-year old Alexander Leung.
The BMX boys 9-12 years old three-lap race was won by A. Gomes, second was Stephen Wilkinson and third Tarah Gaabaron.
Rawle Small won the three-lap race for BMX boys 12-14 years old, second was Deraj Garbarran and third Jenelle Jackson.
Jamal John won the BMX boys open two-lap event ahead of Keron Rutherford and Daniel Fraser respectively.
