Weighted parliamentary majority needed for Procurement Commission – HPS

HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon has rebuffed claims by the Alliance for Change (AFC) political party that government was stalling on the formation of the Procurement Commission.

Dr. Roger Luncheon stated that it was somewhat opportunistic that the AFC sought to raise the issue of the Procurement Commission at every opportune moment. “We would not see the end of linkages with the Procurement Commission and other issues of the day,” he said.
He said that these calls by the political Opposition are always linked to government’s transformational projects. “I wouldn’t be surprised and the public shouldn’t be surprised at these machinations,” he said.
Noting that it would be foolhardy to venture into parliament with nominations when a weighted majority (three-quarters of vote) is needed from members of parliament, he said that names of persons to represent government on such a body are not an issue. “Political will”, he said, will determine whether such a body is formed and constituted.
The various parliamentary committees which are functioning at present in the National Assembly also needed a weighted majority as once the need for these were recognized, these were voted on and put into place, he stated.
