ACTING Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell said, Thursday, that the Vive La Force, West Bank Demerara fatal shooting is being investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
Asked at a press conference, hosted by Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, about progress with the probe in which Ryan Persaud, 14, was killed by a stray bullet believed fired from a high-powered weapon, the Top Cop said, after the findings by OPR, it will be known what took place then.
Brumell said the investigation will take some time since ‘A’ and ‘D’ Divisions are involved.
Responding to questions from the media, as to why the boy’s father was prevented from being present at the post mortem, the Commissioner said he was not aware of that.
Persaud was shot in the back as he exited his yard and was in the process of joining some friends who were fishing in a nearby trench.
The Patentia Secondary School student collapsed just in front of his West Bank Demerara home on September 4 soon after being hit by the bullet
He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The fatal shot, reportedly, originated from the direction of a boat which was moored on the Demerara River in close proximity across from where the teen resided.
Residents had reported that, for some time now, several stray bullets have been penetrating the walls of their homes but nothing was done about it.
Although several persons were questioned, no one was held for the lad’s murder.
