This was disclosed by GECOM Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mr. Vishnu Persaud during a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle.
He advised that a total of 2,816 transactions have been recorded thus far, with 2443 new registrations and 373 changes and corrections.
Persaud said all 28 permanent registration offices are up and running, and the fifth cycle is moving along smoothly; and thus far, there are “no complaints”.
In a previous interview, the PRO had said that while no temporary registration office has been established for this cycle, the Better Hope, East Cast Demerara office, which was established as a temporary office in the fourth cycle, has been made into a permanent office because of the number of transactions that have been going through that office.
This fifth cycle of continuous registration ends on November 23, 2013.
GECOM advises that any Guyanese citizen by birth, descent or naturalization; or a citizen from a Commonwealth country who has been living in Guyana for one year or more, and will be 14 years or older by December 31, 2013, is eligible for registration. Such persons are required to visit the registration office that is responsible for their area of residence to apply for registration, or to uplift their National Identification Cards if they were previously registered and have not uplifted the card as yet.
GECOM also advises that it is the civic duty of all Guyanese who meet the eligibility requirements to apply for registration during this fifth Cycle of Continuous Registration.
“By so doing, you would (i) be taking the required step towards being issued a National Identification Card upon completion of the registration process, and (ii) be included in the Official List of Electors for future elections, if you meet the other eligibility criteria,” GECOM has stated.
Information on registration offices and how one can apply for registration is detailed in a notice in local newspapers and on the GECOM website.
