THE police, at around 04:15 hrs yesterday morning, arrested ten men and four women who were involved in the blocking of the roadway at Ituni, and with the support of machinery from the Ministry of Public Works, the logs used to create the blockage were removed.
A Police Constable was also reportedly assaulted during efforts to arrest another man.
The Police Force also reported that, at about 08:00 hrs yesterday morning, persons used several coconut tree trunks to block the roadway at the Kwakwani Waterfront, but they were subsequently removed.
The Guyana Police Force said it has shown “considerable restraint in this matter” and wishes to reiterate its respect for the rights of all citizens to protest peacefully on issues of concern to them.
The Force said it has no objection to persons conducting peaceful protests, but when protests degenerate into unlawful acts infringing on the rights of other citizens, the police will as a consequence have to take the appropriate action.
Road users and residents in the affected area have been protesting the state of the road since Friday last.
The Ministry of Public Works announced, on Monday, that it was poised to conduct urgent repairs on sections of the Linden-Kwakwani Road in Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Berbice).
Public Works Minister Robeson Benn said that engineers and supervisors visited the deplorable road at Kwakwani to get an understanding of the situation on the ground.
The minister stressed that the state of the road had nothing to do with government neglect but rather the excess rainfall in the early part of this year coupled with the heavy traffic which traverse the roadway.
Hinterland Road Engineer in the ministry, Mr. Naeem Mohamed said on Monday that mobilisation of men and equipment was ongoing with funds guaranteed from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
He said the preparations are being done as a matter of urgency and that the work should start in less than a week.
Mohamed said the ministry will be employing as many contractors as necessary to expedite the process.
The damaged state of the roadway from Linden to Kwakwani has been a source of controversy over the past few weeks, with some residents resorting to blocking the route with logs as a form of protest.
Roadblocks were reported over the last weekend with only emergency vehicles, such as ambulances being allowed to pass. As a result of the protest, the Ministry of Education had to charter a plane over the weekend to send food to the Kwakwani Dormitory.
