BERBICE powerhouse team Albion Community Centre Cricket Club yesterday overpowered Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) by 58 runs in an exhibition encounter at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, thanks to a pugnacious half-century from Jonathan Foo and controlled spin bowling.

Batting first after they won the toss, Albion rattled up a commanding 160 for 7, with Foo top-scoring with 59 (5×4, 2×6), ably supported by Sewnarine Chattergoon’s 39 (6×4) and Devendra Bishoo’s quick-fire 24 which included two reverse-swept sixes off Totaram Bishun.
Foo added 38 for the third wicket with Chattergoon, following the quick demise of both Kandasammy Surujnarine (5) and Anthony Bramble (4), and a further 55 for the fifth wicket with Bishoo, after both Chattergoon and Veerasammy Permaul (0) were dismissed.
Belatedly, Darwin Christian who led DCC introduced Bishun into the attack in the 16th over, with a set Foo looking to score rapidly for his team, but it was Bishoo who answered the call for his side, with two well-timed reverse sweeps off Bishun.
Foo brought up his and the lone half-century of the contest off 38 deliveries, by hitting Dexter George for his fifth four, along with his lone six at that stage, and celebrated in style by hitting the same bowler for a six over wide midwicket.
Kellon Carmichael and Andre Stoll took 2 wickets each for 25 and 29 runs respectively for DCC, whose innings got off to a rampant start by Brian Sattaur and Andrew Lyght, who posted 39 from the first two overs, with the former hitting Chattergoon for 4, 6, 6, and 6 in the first over and the latter dispatching Veerapen Permaul for two sixes in the second.
The demise of Lyght for 14 (2×6), who was caught by Foo at mid-off when he looked to hit Veerasammy Permaul over that area, followed by that of Christian (2), Jamal Hinckson (00) and Stoll (6), left DCC on 58 for 4 in the 9th over of their innings, a collapse that was triggered by Bishoo (2 for 8).
Sattaur looked to continue in the same pugnacious mode for DCC, but with wickets tumbling needlessly at the other end, he joined his teammates back in the pavilion courtesy of a well-judged catch by Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai at long on off Andre Percival.
The team from the Ancient County, well known for their all-spin attack, did not disappoint their small group of supporters, as Andre Percival who took 3 for 9 and Motie-Kanhai 2 for 10, destroying the Queenstown-based DCC batting lineup.
Only Carmichael, with a resilient 26 that included two fours and one six before he was the last man to be dismissed, bowled by Shiraz Ramcharran in the final over, offered any support to Sattaur and resistance to the Berbicians bowling line- up.
