THREE men charged jointly with being in possession of 460 grammes of cannabis sativa at a house at Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice were remanded to prison until September 2 by New Amsterdam Magistrate Rhondel Weaver after their legal counsel did not advance any special reason why they should be granted bail.
However, defence lawyer Charrandas Persaud, in an application for bail, submitted that the narcotic was never found on the person of any of the defendants, but in an abandoned house, where the men were taken and beaten by the police.
Police prosecutor Corporal Orin Joseph, responding, told Magistrate Rhondel Weaver that when ranks arrived at the building, the defendants were each seen handling the three packages in which were compressed leaves, seeds and stems of the cannabis sativa.
The magistrate subsequently ruled that the defence had not advanced to the court any special reason why any of the men should be bailed, as the reason must be attributed to the offender, and not to the offence. Consequently, the men were remanded until September 2.
