President Donald Ramotar is saddened by the news of the death of former Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Doodnauth Singh.
Mr. Singh, also a Senior Counsel, was a man of high intellect, having amassed great experience during his legal life, both locally and internationally. He served Guyana with utmost distinction, pride and selflessness.
He had given decades of service to Guyana, most in the legal profession, in which he was known as an outstanding legal luminary.
President Ramotar and First Lady Deolatchmee Ramotar, on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana express deepest condolence to the family and friends of the late Doodnauth Singh
Anil Nandlall, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs
On Wednesday night Doodnauth Singh SC, passed away. He was my guru; my mentor and the greatest inspiration in my legal career. He was my first employer and the one who presented my petition to practise law at the Guyana Bar. He was the best advocate I have ever seen in a Courtroom. His voice was incomparable, his charm before the jury, mesmerizing, his cross- examination clinical and devastating;his memory …impeccable. I can truly say that I learnt from a master. The impact that he has had on my legal career is immeasurable. I feel priveliged to have emulated him to hold the office of Attorney -General . I shall forever remain grateful to him for what I have learnt from him. I know he has lived a full life and had a long and distinguished career which started where it ended, at the Attorney -General Chambers. His role on the stage of life has ended. The curtains fell tonite. He was 80 years old. 50 of those were spent in the legal profession. Thanks Mr Singh for your guidance and advice over the years.. Rest in Peace. I am sure Bhagwan will take you through the rest of the journey safely.
Dr. Steve Surujbally, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM)
It is with a deep sense of sadness that I noted the passing of Mr. Doodnauth Singh, former Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission for the conduct of the 1997 General and Regional Elections.
Apart from his affable personality, Mr. Doodnauth Singh will always be remembered by me for his willingness to forthrightly share information with me whenever I consulted with him on election related matters. An excellent source of information pertaining to those elections now no longer exists.
On behalf of the Guyana Elections Commission, I extend deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr. Doodnauth Singh.
Khemraj Ramjattan, Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC)
“I would like to say that he was one of the finest advocates this country has ever seen,” said Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, Leader of the Alliance For Change.
Ramjattan also lauded the late lawyer’s “tremendous intellect” and said that he was capable of charming “the jury as well as the judge.”
Saying that Singh was “very warm with opponents”, Ramjattan reminisced: “Even though they’d get vexed with him, he would never get vex with them.”
He recalled, too, that the late Attorney-General was seen as a “hero” by Berbician youths after winning “all these cases in Corentyne” in the 1970s, defending political activists, who were repeatedly tried on trumped up charges in that region. Ramjattan made specific reference to Singh’s role as defense counsel in the iconic trials of PPP political Arnold Rampersaud, who was in 1974 charged – many believe he was framed – for murder during political unrest at No. 62 Village.
The AFC leader also fondly recalled a 1973 pre-election speech the former GECOM Chairman made alongside the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan.
Keith Massiah
My recollection of Doodnauth goes back many years, we were colleagues in the Attorney General’s office as young attorneys. He was a brilliant criminal advocate and he was courageous in the fight for justice.
He also took his duty as AG seriously, never forgetting that he was leader of the bar, as it is sometimes done these days.
Not so long ago, Doodnauth and I appeared in the Court of Appeal against each other. The matter was not determined but we enjoyed working together.
The bar has suffered a great loss with the passing of Doodnauth Singh. Heartfelt condolences to his wife and children.
The National Assembly of Guyana
The Hon. Speaker, Members of the National Assembly, Clerk and Staff of the Parliament Office mourn the death of Mr. Doodnauth Singh, S.C., former Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, and Member of Parliament from the 16th June 2001 to February 1, 2009, and collectively express deepest sympathy and condolence to his grieving widow, children, family, friends and former colleagues and associates.
Mr. Singh was a distinguished jurist who won for himself, and country, international acclaim and recognition for his advocacy and legal acumen, and will be remembered for his crisp and concise presentations in the National Assembly, which were always well delivered and received.
Despite Mr. Singh’s many notable achievements, both as a practicing Senior Counsel and Member of Parliament, he maintained a great sense of humility and simplicity. He was a friend to everyone and never allowed his sojourn into the world of politics as the Nation’s Attorney General to be seen and understood as anything more than an act of a professional.
In February 2009, the National Assembly of the then 9th Parliament bid Mr. Singh good bye as he proceeded into retirement and he himself, in parting remarks, called for a lifting of the standard of debate, discourse and behavior in the House; describing it as the “highest Court in the land” where the people’s business must be debated not as if it were a vendor’s market.
