THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has advertised, on its website and in local newspapers, for suitably qualified persons to fill the currently vacant position of Chief Elections Officer (CEO).
This follows the non-renewal of the contract of previous CEO, Mr. Gocool Bodhoo, which expired on April 30, 2013. The commission, by way of majority vote, had in July decided against renewing Boodhoo’s contract.
According to the ad, the CEO is required to play the key leadership role in the GECOM’s Secretariat, with responsibility for implementing all aspects of its operations, and ensuring that results achieved are consistent with the laws of Guyana and the policies determined by the chairman and commission.
It further stated that the CEO acts as the primary point of contact between GECOM and the staff members of the secretariat, and participates in the representation of the commission’s policies and activities in interactions with stakeholders, and other interest groups, including political parties, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), donor agencies, international agencies and institutions and individuals, in matters relating directly to the operations of GECOM.
The deadline for submissions of all applications is September 30, 2013.
Meanwhile, in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle last month, GECOM Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mr. Vishnu Persaud had stated that the position will be advertised as widely as possible.
He had noted that appointment of the new CEO can only be done by the Commission, and related that after the post would have been advertised and applications received, short listing of candidates will be done by the Commission itself and not the Human Resources Department of GECOM.
He explained that following that process, short listed candidates will be invited for interviews and members of the Commission will make the final decision on who is the most suitably qualified person for the position.
Persaud had also said that anyone fitting the criteria detailed in the job description advertised can apply for the position, including Mr. Gocool Boodhoo.
He had advised that the terms of reference (TOR) of the CEO would come under review by the members of the Commission who will decide whether any amendments are to be made before the position is filled.
