Plaisance man allegedly beaten to death by girlfriend

A TURBULENT relationship ended early yesterday morning when Clifford Singh, 35, of Lot 28 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, was allegedly beaten to death by his common-law wife of three years, who is on the run.

Police reported that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Clifford Singh whose body was found with “suspected marks of violence” at about 02:15 hrs on August 14 on Prince William Street. The police are awaiting a post-mortem.

Following the murder, the couple’s 10-month-old baby boy was taken from the house by the police.

A neighbour (who wish to remain anonymous) told the Chronicle yesterday morning that shortly before 02:00 hrs, she was in bed when she heard screaming and got up to look outside to see what was happening.
The woman said that just in front of her yard she saw a woman using what looked like a piece of wood, repeatedly beating away on a man who was on the ground.
She stated that she opened the door and step out as the woman was still “lashing away” on the man and it was like about six more lashes then the woman’s cell phone rang and she answered it and ran off in the direction of the railway embankment.
At that point, she said she ventured outside to see who it was and soon after a neighbour came over and they went on the road and saw it was their neighbour, Clifford Singh, lying motionless.
She explained that he appeared dead and was lying on his back and his face was disfigured, his teeth were gone and his eyes were opened. He was severely beaten in the head.
Meanwhile, mother of the deceased, Leah Singh, 67, of Lot 21 Prince William Street, Plaisance said that she learnt of the incident when a villager went to her house saying “put on your clothes and come see your son on the road”.
She explained that she saw the body from a distance because the police told her not to go too close but knew it was her son.
The grieving Singh told the Chronicle that he is her last son and she takes care of him by cooking his meals and even provide him with some pocket money much to the dislike of his girlfriend.
Leah stated that the suspected murderer was “a bully” and took away her son’s money even before he could count it but said they used to have alcoholic beverages together and when they do they often quarrel which would eventually lead to a fight.
She added that the girl is a stranger to the village and is staying at her grandmother’s house in the same street and never spoke to her but knows that she does “run bush” (interior) and always have a knife.
Leah stated that when the girl came to the village her son ‘pickup’ her and they began dating and after three years they have a 10-month-old baby boy but the relationship was marred by constant fights.
The woman noted that she always used to talk to her son but he did not listen and was not surprised that he was killed because one time his girlfriend even attacked him with a knife in her presence.
Singh told reporters yesterday morning that her son was the victim of domestic abuse because she knew his girlfriend would hit him but he hid it from her and whenever she talked to him he would say “Mommy is my girlfriend”.
The woman pointed out that since 2004, he moved into a friend’s house as a caretaker and shortly after he ‘hook up’ with the woman identified as Dacia Bourne, 22.
When asked what she had to say to the woman, Leah declared: “I would tell her that she finished the job she came to do because that was what she wanted to do all the time.”
The deceased, who had a 14-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, reportedly worked as a mason before he met his demise.
Within recent weeks several men, in an apparent fit of rage, armed themselves with cutlasses and hacked their wives and girlfriend and in one instance his two children to death during domestic quarrels.
