INTERNATIONAL Cricket returned to Guyana recently, after a lapse of two years, with the most recent being three of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) matches played at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence on July 31, August 2 and 4. A double header was witnessed on the latter day.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon at a post -Cabinet media briefing Thursday, noting the sold-out matches, equally sold-out hotel rooms and booked-out flights during that period, posited that “the successful return was as much a result of Government’s focus on Guyana’s tourism product, as well as sport administration in general.”
He noted that the CPL cricket is just one in a line of the successful accomplishments that has followed Government’s selling of Destination Guyana. “The successes that we have seen with the return of international cricket, we see them being mirrored in other successes,” he said. He pointed to Guyana successfully hosting the tourism conference.
The development of Guyana’s tourism product has a strong economic underpinning, and there has been willingness on the part of tour operators in CARICOM and worldwide to sell the Guyana brand, Dr. Luncheon noted.
He said this augurs well for the future development of the sector, which Government, through the Ministry of Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the private sector, has been aggressively pursuing.
“The importance of exploiting the synergy with tour operators in CARICOM to offer what uniquely Guyana offers, has been stressed and remains a very fundamental part of our approach in putting Guyana on the event maps of the world tourism industry.”
The Tourism Ministry, GTA and important stakeholders have been developing Destination Guyana, covering marketing, product development, service training to those who provide the tourism product, and ensuring accessibility into and out of Guyana.(GINA)
