Alfred Fernandes, 63, a supervisor at the ‘Johnny P Supermarket’ on Aubrey Barker Road in South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown, was attacked by an armed man, who wounded him in his abdomen, took away a bag containing $400,000., and escaped in a waiting motor car.
Fernandes’s relatives said yesterday that he was still in hospital, but in stable condition.
Another employee of the business, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Guyana Chronicle that the incident appeared to have been well orchestrated.
He said the business had closed for the day, but employees were inside the premises when the robbery took place.
The man explained that the robber entered and went directly to Fernandes, who suffered the injury when he hesitated to hand over the money.
A recently-opened supermarket owned by a Chinese national in the same street was robbed in a similar fashion the next night, but no one was hurt in that heist.
