Road fatalities mainly caused by speeding, drunk driving : – Acting Traffic Chief

ACTING Traffic Chief Kevin Adonis said, yesterday, that the leading contributors to road fatalities are inattentiveness, speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol (drunk driving). Urging all road users to look out for each other, the Police Superintendent revealed that, so far, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Department has recorded 59 accidents with 62 deaths this year.
For the corresponding period last year, there were 49 accidents with 51 deaths, he noted.
Giving further details, he disclosed that 21 pedestrians were killed in the 2013 mishaps and private cars lead the category for vehicles involved.
Thirteen motorcycles, 10 motor-lorries and 10 bicycles were involved in the 2013 fatal accidents statistic.
Adonis explained that with respect to the latest road fatality in which a Guyana Fire Service (GFS) officer died, the man was a back seat passenger in the motor car when it lashed a utility pole causing him to be thrown forward.
Police said it happened about 00:30 hrs on August 1, on the public road at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice. Two men were in the vehicle when the driver lost control and crashed.
They suffered injuries and were taken to Fort Wellington Hospital, at West Coast Berbice, too, where Linden Mc Almont was pronounced dead on arrival and Keith Bond, 56, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

The driver is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle remarked that the unfortunate death of Mc Almont, 48, is a tragedy for the GFS.
He said the passing of the purchasing officer for the Quartermaster Stores is a great loss and shock for all firefighters since the latter was very committed and dedicated to his work.
Gentle said his demise is a real blow to the GFS and they are awaiting the arrival of Mc Almont’s wife, who is overseas.
Mc Almont joined the GFS, along with nine others from the Fire Section of the Linmine Constabulary, as a sergeant and had 10 years service.
