GBTI open tennis – Defending champion Downes records win over Andrews

JASON Andrews, on Monday, became Anthony Downes first victim in a his defence of his men’s singles title in the  GBTI Open tennis tournament as matches continued down at the courts of the GBTI Recreational Centre, Bel Air pARK.

Defending his title against a packed men’s singles line up, Downes got off to an easy start as he made quick work of Andrews, whom he teams up with in the men’s doubles.
After putting together a 6-2, 6-4 win against Craig Campbell in his first round match, Andrews was still no match to hold his own against Downes.
Andrews went down 1 – 6, 0 – 6, with his only game in the entire match came from a service struggle, through unforced errors from Anthony who was unable to control the balls off his racquet, a press release said.
The unseeded Andrews could not get any of his service returns into play as he tried blasting every serve return for a winner. Andrews further found it hard to serve the net, as he began double faulting in the beginning of the second set.
Downes’ easy win against Andrew was one in a string of easy matches that played off on Monday. Number three seed Afruica Gentle delivered a double bagel to Maria Stephens as she advanced into the semi finals of the ladies singles, where she will next face Nicola Ramdyhan for a place in the finals.
Also moving on was top seed in the men’s 35 singles, Carlos Adams as another double was dished out. Adams ousted Albert Madramottoo 6-0, 6-0, to join Harry Panday who took out Dick Wesenhagen easily 6-2, 6-2 to progress to the second round.
The tournament continues this evening  with four more matches, as Harry Panday takes on Joseph Dejonge , Ronald Murray battles Daniel Lopes, Victor Demchenko  comes up againstn Seaden David Longe, while Carols Adams teams up with Owen Lewis to square off against  Madramottoo and Steve David Longe in men’s 35 doubles.
