Couple remanded on marijuana trafficking charge

THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Joseph Barton and Denise Van Lang, 18, both of Lot 17 Charlestown, Georgetown, were remanded to prison yesterday on a drug charge.

Before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, they each pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on Thursday, July 18, at Lot 17 Charlestown, they had in their possession 30 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Sergeant Vernetta Pindar, prosecuting, told the Court, on that day about 07:00 hrs, ranks from Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, acting on information, conducted a search on the defendants’  Lot 17 Charlestown home and found the prohibited substance.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, representing the duo, said the narcotic in milk tin had been left by the previous tenants and he requested bail for Van Lang, stating that she has to care for a baby.
But the Chief Magistrate said that no special reason had been advanced by the lawyer for the bail grant and she put off the case to August 9.
