CHAIRMAN of Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), Mr. David Armogan has noted that, while Information Technology (IT) is imperative for development, the globally acceptable skill will enable the benefactors to be in a better position to meet the unfolding challenges in the technical domain and boost their financial income.
He made the observation during the feature address at a graduation ceremony, at Albion Community Centre, for 160 trainees who completed six months training at various levels of IT related courses.
The programmes, which were conducted in collaboration with the GuySuCo Albion Estate, was a part of the Government’s initiative and commitment to ensure that all citizens have the required technical skill to survive the technological age.
Speaking at the function last Saturday, Armogan, recognising that the graduates, of varying ages, comprised in excess of seventy-five percent females pointed out that the knowledge gained will help empower the women, so that they can supplement their incomes.
“You will be able to find jobs for yourselves and you can also find jobs which will allow you to work at home,” he pointed out.
Armogan said: “As part of the People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) 2011 manifesto, job empowerment is one of the major goals of the current administration. One of the areas the party focused on is Information Technology. Thousands of jobs will be created through call centres.
“This type of skill, which you now have, provides unique opportunities for persons who did not go to high school but they can now access information and conduct business from home through the computer,” he suggested.
The IT programme commenced in 2011, with hundreds to be trained bi-annually.
