Compared to 2012… : Police report 3 percent increase in serious crimes

THE Guyana Police Force (GPF), yesterday, reported that there has been an overall three percent increase in serious crimes from January to June this year, as compared to 2012. It said the total number of such reports made between January 1 and June 30 was 1,979, in comparison to 1,923 for the same period last year.
Some of the offences monitored are murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape and kidnapping.   
Sixty murders were recorded at the end of June, as against 62 for the same period in 2012, a three percent decrease. Of the 60, 28 were of the disorderly type, nine committed during armed robberies, one was execution kind and six were domestic related, while the other 16 are, so far, of an undetermined category.
At the end of June, robbery under arms had decreased by seven percent, with 472 reported in 2013 and 509 for the same time span in 2012. The statistics indicate a reduction of five percent in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms and 10 percent where weapons other than guns were used by the perpetrators.
In relation to traffic, there has been 16 more road fatalities at the end of June 2013 than for the same period in 2012, with 56 occurring in 53 accidents this year and 40 in 38 accidents last 2012.
The period January 1 to June 30, 2013, saw reductions in relation to the other categories of traffic accidents described as serious, minor and occasioning damage.
So far, pedestrians have been the main road users killed, 17 of them having lost their lives at the end of June 2013. In addition, 10 motor cyclists, 10 pedal cyclists, seven drivers and 10 passengers of motor vehicles and two pillion riders.
The Police reported that speeding continues to be a major contributing factor to fatal accidents and was the cause of 41 of the 53 fatalities recorded at the end of June 2013.  
Traffic enforcement by the Police, during the period January to June 2013, resulted in a total of 43,688 cases being made against errant motorists and 10,863 were for speeding.
