Talking music with…The phenomenal Raul Mitchell

YOU may have heard about him, or seen him at a party doing his thing. His preferred mode of dress is deceptively casual: Short pants, tee shirt, slippers, and a pleasant smile. But, simple as he is, he is one of the most favoured DJs/Selectors in Guyana.

His name is Raul Mitchell, but he is nicknamed “Cash Money”. And he was proclaimed the Most Improved Selector in 2011.

Raul’s journey into music started since he was 15, and was inspired by his mother, who, unfortunately, passed away in 2005. She had showered him with cassettes back in the days when Dancehall was the music of the day.

He said, “My mom loved Dancehall music, and she would spend her last money on its purchase. She told me that if it’s music I like, go ahead with the career; but today she is not here to see the strides that I have made.”

Mitchell has an effervescent personality, and is well liked by his peers at Slingerz Entertainment, where he is one of three DJs/Selectors. He likes all types of music, and was very much into music at an early age, but “things music” started to happen for him when he attained the age of 18 years. Those “things” enhanced his career, caused his great talent to be recognized, and introduced him to the owner of Slingerz Entertainment.

Mitchell is an ambassador of ANSA McAL Trading Limited (Carib Beer) and Digicel Guyana, and is a well-known radio and television personality who is noted for his unique style of selecting music at events, parties and other functions “musical”.

He said, “I dedicate my life to music; it is what I like to do, and I will continue (doing) with the support of some generous folks. I will make it!”

Mitchell recently returned to Guyana after his London tour, made at the invitation of Vision Sounds Limited, Dan Fox Promotions and GT Promotions. His three-week stay was well-received by the London folks, he said, and the response was overwhelming at the functions to which he and DJ Garwin were invited; which made him feel good about his talent.

Mitchell is now 22 years old. He said he had attended the Covent Garden Secondary School, and had even performed at schools as a dancer; and during his DJ days, he was recognised and introduced to Javed Ali of Slingerz Entertainment in 2009, who hired him on the spot.

His talent has taken him to the United Kingdom, Barbados, and Trinidad & Tobago; and he is hoping to visit even more foreign countries and play alongside some top people in music, including DJ Bill Cosby, Stone Love, Tong Matterhorn, and Richie Feelings, among other greats.
