Auto dealer remanded on drug trafficking charge

FORTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD auto dealer, Kurt Brown, of Lot 45 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, faced a drug charge before Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence, details of which said that same day, in Norton Street; he was in possession of 30.4 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Corporal Bharrat Mangru, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for Brown, on the grounds that he is, presently, facing another similar charge in front of Chief Magistrate, Preiya Sewnarine-Beharry and that the substance was found in a car parked in the defendant’s yard.
Pre-trial freedom was denied and the father of seven was remanded to prison until July 19, despite representation by attorney-at-law, Mr. James Bond.
The lawyer claimed that a search had been carried out in the neighbouring yard as well and, shortly after, an investigating officer searched the vehicle which is always open for business every day.
Defence Counsel said Brown suspects he is being framed because it was after a second search, not in the defendant’s presence, that the alleged substance was found.
