BERBICE police are continuing their investigations into the discovery of numerous opened mails which were found at the home of a postman in that county last month.
A source close to the probe revealed that efforts are being made to contact some 300 people, to whom the
correspondences were addressed.
“This investigation will take a lot of time, as we have to contact over 300 addressees who have to submit their respective statements.
“In this age, people are sending unregistered mails containing cash. There were breaches of the Postal Act which the relevant authorities will have to address,” the source pointed out.
The broached mails were unearthed after the spouse of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) employee suspected to be involved in the tampering reported, to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam, that she had been assaulted by him.
Consequently, she took cops to where they live at Timmers Dam, Mount Sinai, West Canje, also in Berbice, from where the unsealed utility bills, Christmas cards and mail from the United States (U.S.) Embassy were retrieved.
The implicated postman was arrested and has since been cooperating with the investigators.
