Surinamese on $90,000 bail after Corentyne fatal accident

A MAN driving a motor vehicle with a Surinamese licence plate 38-29–ZP, which, allegedly, struck vigilante killing eyewitness Sunita Persaud known as Anne Persaud, was granted $90,000 bail by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh on Tuesday.

That was after the defendant, Srawan Kumar Outar, 32, of Paramaribo, Suriname, pleaded not guilty to driving  under the influence of alcohol, failure to render assistance and failing to stop after an accident.
It was alleged that he had 43 microgrammes of alcohol in his system, which exceeded the prescribed limit.
Police said, on Sunday June 30,  around 00:30 hrs, Persaud, 23, of Rose Hall, was hit by the vehicle while crossing the Port Mourant Public Road, Corentyne.
She was taken to New Amsterdam Hospital and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she later succumbed.
Persaud had several days previously, been identified as one of those who saw vigilantes beat an alleged burglar to death.
The driver of the vehicle which fatally injured her had attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended.
However, at the Albion Court, Corenyne, on Tuesday, he was not charged with causing the death of Persaud, as the police said that is still being investigated.
Meanwhile, after the defendant denied the allegations, the cases were  scheduled to be called, for report, at the Whim Court, Corentyne, too, on July 15.
